A personal choice....a personal commitment. I wonder if John designed it himself? It is a work of art. It just happens to be on John Mayer's body. Hahaha...yeah, I have seen the picture and I am still curious!
omfg. I'm in shock yet. That is too much tatoo for one arm. Johnny, don't do that on your other side. All in all it looks cool. I hope soon John will tell us something more about this :D whooooooooaaaaa! that's all I got to say right now. now, if I do a tatoo on my body and my parents gonna kill me it's gonna be your fault Johnny!
That is so ugly. And the worst part is, he's stuck with it for the rest of his life. I wonder if that woman he sees on the barstool when he's wearing shirt sleeves, is going to like him as much when he takes off his shirt.
Wow, it's beautiful but...that's going to be there forever. Not going to look so cool when he's 70 but it's totally a personal choice. I would love to hear his take on it. Hopefully we've got a blog coming soon. Maybe explains why he spent so long in Japan. There's a lot of work gone into that sleeve.
I love tattoos on other people, but I don't have any myself. It looks real (not for Pop Fiction) but I think it's kinda cool. It will look good when he's holding a guitar and jammin out at the concerts. He just had an extended period of reflection so I can't wait to hear what went into the design of it.
I don't really like it either. But, it's his decision. I loved his other tattoos because nothing was really completely covered, but this is too much on one arm. It's probably only a matter of time before he does the other arm.
I like it. It looks like the flowers haven't been done yet so if, or when, they are coloured and I think it'll bring more life to it. So it's not so dark and black.
Still John. Still Sexy. Doesn't change anything. He can still play the guitar and sing/write beautiful music.
Wonder what the folks on John's "payroll" had to say about this? Will it conflict with his/their supplementary revenue streams, i.e. the Gap ads and his 'college kid' appeal ? Of course. How much it does is the question..
This is irezumi style Japanese body art. Generally it's done as sleeves or full back/chest, etc. Deeply symbolic and meaningful to the wearer.

I want to cry! why? why? why? I thought he was intelligent. I can see I was wrong! I don't want to see this at the upcoming tour show but I need the music so i'm in a pickle!
We can now see what kind of wife he is looking for!

Perhaps he did this to remind him of just that?

To those of you who are drawing a connection between John's intelligence and his choice in body art...shame on you. How dare you be so judgemental over someone who has brought you such meaningful music. I think it's your intellingence, or lack there of, that should be questioned.
Tattoos are deeply personal and are done for the person who wears them. What HE thinks is all that matters. And what it looks like when he's "mature" and wrinkled is not the issue. What matters is the expression of how he feels now.
And to the moron who said "Now I know what kind of wife he's looking for"....double shame on you. I have tattoos and so does my husband. We're professionals that make more money than most our age, have two beautiful and extremely intelligent children and we're very participatory in their lives, in their school and in our community. I take what you said as a personal insult. Next time you feel the urge to say something like that, fight it.
Folks, lets not forget why you even visit this site in the first place. Your love for Mayer and his music. You either accept him as he is, or you walk away. But don't come here and drop judgement on him like this. It serves no one.
Woah. Of course anyone is entitled to cover their body in tatoos if they choose. However, I don't like it when a person's arms don't look like arms anymore because they are covered in tatoos. There's no going back now - so I guess I better get used to it. It definitely takes a notch down on his attractiveness level, though. :(
This will take some getting used to visually, but has no bearing on his musical ability and that VOICE! I personally dislike the stereotypes associated with people who get tattoos. I am strongly considering getting a few tattoos. Tattoos say nothing about the moral fibers of an individual, about maturity, or their ideas for a potential spouse. What the hell do they have to do with any of that? They just say that a particular person chose these as a vehicle for expression. This doesn't seem unlike John, who admits he loves design in its various forms. It's very true to his personality and I do like that it ties in with his previous tattoos. Yeah, that's a lot of ink to look at. Okay. So if you dislike it then you can rest assured that you will never get a sleeve, but don't draw conclusions about him as a person based on something that has no bearing on his character. He's still got a brilliant mind. That makes the tattoos even hotter because you know he thought them through.
Wow that's a work of art! And apparently something that he enjoys, and liked enough to get on HIS body. I don't understand why many of you care so much about what he does to HIS body. If you think it's trashy or what not, there are ways to POLITELY show dislike.
Does it make him any less of an awesome musician? NO I don't think so.
Personally, I love the tat. Its a beautiful design. Can't wait to see it in person this summer. I'm surprised to see all of the hate around here. Guess JM didn't know he had to run his decisions by "the public" for approval.
I cannot stop thinking about this development. Kind of bizarre that it's affecting me on so many levels.
I like it. All of it. Shows he's not scared of commitment. He's a walking canvas, a music-breathing (harmony melody rhythm pitchin cadenced flawed perfection), all-inclusive thinking-man living for himself and the art that is life.
I don't think any of us has the right to say that he is ruining his skin, or being a "dumbass" as somebody mentioned a few times. If you don't like it, you can go ahead and say that you don't like it. But then basing your judgment of somebody's intelligence and character on the kind of tattoos he chooses to have? That speaks a lot about your own intelligence too.
Personally I don't like the tattoo very much either, but it is his fingers and his brain that I love. I'm not a fan of tattoos, but hey it's his skin. His rules.
Wow, I think that it's great for him. If the tatoo has real meaning then it's even more beautiful. Don't judge him for getting more art, I'm not a huge sleeve person but I like what they stand for.
I am hoping it is pop fiction! but anyway how long do you think it would take to get a tattoo sleeve? I'm thinking a few weeks to get it complete. Could be why he was in Hong Kong for such a long time.
Erica--I highly doubt it's pop fiction haha I really hope John wouldn't stoop to that level... Especially because it would make him look like somewhat of a hypocrite. I don't know. I just think he does enough of it on his own. John's cool.
It's beautiful. Japanese are the most talented tattoo artists in my opinion. I love that he did this instead of having a random assortment of "sushi tattoo's" - one here, one there.. XD
Kate said....JM made a conscious choice to have this done and I am certain it wasn't without thought or reason - and the design was chosen carefully. I think it will always remind him of the month he spent in Japan when he was 30 and rediscovering himself.
He likes getting tattoos. Don't judge him for it.
JM, good on you for being able to express yourself. And thanks for showing it off. ________
His job is to make beautiful music, and that's it. He is not there to please you people, by living up to the image you've created in your minds. He's not your friend, he's not your boyfriend, husband, or anything. You don't have the right to tell him, or any of those people, what he can and can't do. It's really none of our business.. it's his body, it's his mind, and it's his soul. I'm glad he doesn't care what anyone else thinks.
He looks like Joe Madden now. Good for him... I just find that decision immature and useless. And I'm physically disgusted, sorry john... But I can't do nothing about it. It affects me at the point where I don't know if I'll be able to listen to his song without feeling uncomfortable. It reveals a different aspect of his personnality... think about the people who get tatooes that big. They're not the sweetest.
What strikes me- other than its really none of our business what he does to his body- but what really stikes me is the huge amount of patience he has to sit through getting a sleeve done- and the pain that he went through too! So in that respect I can admire him for what he went through to get it! It's not about right or wrong- let's look at it like that- it just is.
"He looks like Joe Madden now. Good for him... I just find that decision immature and useless. And I'm physically disgusted, sorry john... But I can't do nothing about it. Kamalia, that is one of the most ignorant things I've ever read on here. It must be really easy to go through your life making snap judgements about people based on the way they look. I mean, it takes all the work out of ever having to get to know someone. And I bet you look perfect and everyone loves you because of it, not because of what's inside you.
Let me ask you something...Do you have your ears pierced? Do you wear makeup? Jewelry? What kind of clothes do you wear? These are things you do on a daily basis to make yourself feel good about the way you look.
People who get tattoos are doing the same thing, just on a different scale. For me, the tattoos are a part of who I am. If I looked in the mirror and didn't see them, I would feel like I wasn't dressed. Like something was missing. But that's me, not you, and I'm not asking you to think the way I do. Neither is Mayer.
You need an education, my friend. I feel sorry for you. And if you stop being a fan over something as insignificant as this, he's probably better off without having someone like you in his corner.
geez, i hate to butt in and everything but im sorry kamalia what you wrote was pretty straight forward so whats not to get?
correct me if im wrong but you wrote "It affects me at the point where I don't know if I'll be able to listen to his song without feeling uncomfortable."
it is very sad that a tattoo has made you feel this way. the ink and his arm and anywhere else on his body has no effect on the beautiful music he makes, which should be a known fact for any true john mayer fan.
also, judging someone based on whether or not they have tattoos is the equivalent of judging someone on their grammer usage.
so by the looks of your comment, i can only infer that you are highly uneducated. its i cant do anything about it, not nothing.
Some of you are being very judgmental as to how john's new tattoo affects his personality. i said i didn't like it but i know very damn well this doesn't change what an amazing musician and person he is. If you think something like what is on his skin changes what type of person he is then you aren't a real fan. I'll learn to love it John.
I love him so much, his music, that I've been hurt because it's a little as if this tatoo had been done on my body. I know it's weird, but I feel so close to John that it's how I feel right now. I guess I'll have to accept it, but I get tired of accepting everything he does.
I think we all knew John had this side to his personality, but most people didn't know it. The true JM fans (most of us here) knew that he liked tattoos and we weren't surprised when he'd get another one. The problem is that, while some of you on here criticize people for judging based on tattoos, people do judge based on tattoos (right or wrong). Because of this people tend to judge those people hanging out with people who have tattoos (guilty by association, I suppose). I'm sensing that some people feel that they will be judged for being fans of a guy who has this many tattoos. Uninformed people will assume things about John, and therefore about them for being fans of John.
That being said, all of that is not the right thing to do and no one should judge anyone based on their outward appearance. Sadly though, it does happen.
Just the first things that came into my head after reading these comments.
the comments on here have been down right ignorant...
and to have blogs and chat rooms on the right or wrong of a personal choice is down right pitiful..
how old are some of you...
trashy?
hate this?
rockers and bike people?
closed minded twits... I'm an professional and I have a tat of a panther on my leg... my hubby is a professional as well and he has a full eaglespread wings on his shoulders...
what planet do some of you live on?
that's exactly what I mean... it was never about the music.. all some care about it the look..
It seems like some people are facing the harsh reality that you don't actually "know" JM as much as you'd like to believe that you do. Try to reconcile the prejudices you have against men w/ major tats w/ you're supposed "love" for JM. Throw in the fact that he did something so unexpected & your worlds are just rocked to the core. Maybe its because I'm older, but it seems a tad much to be personally offended by a choice that he made for his own body. He hasn't even commented on or explained the inspiration for his art and we're already passing judgment.
And you say we're close minded ? You could show some respect for people who are shocked. The judgements come from the fact that we care about him and what he does in his life. It may sounds incredible, but judgements make part of the love we show to him because we feel concerned.
1- Doesn't it make his arm look a little bionic? I think so, and knowing what his arm can do musically, it really is. :) 2- Can't we all just get along? None of us would be harsh to another in person so let's chill out here too. Please??
There seems to be a lot of judgment towards Mayer and towards other people/fans for judging him. It’s all very judgmental. If you don’t like the tat close your eyes then listen to the music.
"The judgements come from the fact that we care about him and what he does in his life. It may sounds incredible, but judgements make part of the love we show to him because we feel concerned."
Oh grow up... concerned about what? Concerned when a grown man gets a tat?
"think about the people who get tatooes that big. They're not the sweetest."
Kamalia, how exactly did I misunderstand what you said? You're making a judgement on someone's personality based on what you see, NOT what you know. Go ahead, be sad for me. At least my mind is open and there's no prejudice in my heart. I hope you find your way there someday.
maybe now the swarm of fan girls that buy tickets to see "their John" can be so disgusted by the new look that they won't buy out the tickets and I can get a decent seat..
I am not surprised at all by this great and obvious visual change. Fans- you know. You KNOW that every mark on his body stands as evidence for some remarkable overcoming or crossing or graduation in his life. He's been upfront about this trip to Japan being different. He's been telling us From His Heart about a change in his psychology he's encountered during this trip and about how enlightening the change was. Don't be offended by this difference you can see, because it stands for something great! We've all wished before that time would stop so we could savor the moment of something special forever- and this is his way of remembering. Whats great is that he's not JUST remembering, but he's showing and sharing a piece of the change with anyone who can look on it- That includes us.
This is a testament to something he's overcome.. Work from there.
I can't believe this is turning into such a big debate.
Sure, it's not something everyone would choose to do to their body... But, So what? He got a tattoo. It's not the end of the world.
It's really no different then if he cut his hair or changed his clothes. Yeah, I was bummed when he chopped off all his hair. But there isn't anything you can do but say "I liked it better before, but Oh Well...not my choice to make"
All he did was make a choice to change his outward appearance. It is in no way related to his music, which is the reason we are all supposed to be here. If I close my eyes and listen to him playing the guitar, it's still going to sound the same, and have the same meaning.
Tat's or no tat's he's still the same person. He's just choosing to "wear his heart on his sleeve" so to speak
I'm kinda feeling like if a 8 year old fan of Hannah Montana tried to criticize Beethoven or something...I mean everyone has their opinion, but some people's just don't count.
If you don't appreciate tattoo's as pieces of art, then how can you judge it.
I really thought in 2008 we were about a decade past people judging people with tattoo's. I agree with "What" SHAME, SHAME, SHAME
I LOOOOVE IT! This shows how meaningful his trip was to Japan. I love how he incorporated his other tats in it...i bet he colors the flowers. I love this style of tatoo art. Really Beautiful John. Seriously.
I think its awesome and I'm not surprised that he did this! I've had a feeling for years that his love of tattoos would result in a sleeve. In the end, it's his body and if he wants to live with having a ton of tattoos that's his prerogative. My dad has a lot of tats and he's not "trashy". He got them in the military while serving for this country. My dad will be 80 this year and his tats still rock.
his tattoos used to be so unique, the srv so special but now they are blurred together and it doesn't make them stand out like they used to and it looses all effect. can't wait to hear his reasoning. maybe it's drawn on like the right arm permanent marker drawing on the cruise???
Wow, and I thought John's fans were down to earth, relaxed people.
Get off your high horses. Remove yourselves from your pedestals. Getting a tattoo makes no reflection on one's intelligence, artistic ability, or even personality. Society has created this negative connotation around tattoos to the point that someone who has them is assumed to be a negative person/influence, hence the "so that's what kind of wife he's looking for" comments.
And to the comment about his intelligence, do you think he wasn't intelligent enough to know that it's something that will be with him for the rest of his life? He's a bright guy, I think he realizes that, and knowingly chose to do it anyways. Just because it doesn't reflect your tastes doesn't mean it's unintelligent.
This is what John meant about his fans overconsuming. Many of you are overconsuming him, and it's disgusting, to the point where you're treating his body and the decisions he makes with it like they're decisions regarding your own body. You do no own John Mayer. You own copies of his music. Recognize the difference.
In order to establish myself as unbiased, I should note that I have no tattoos, I like/don't mind tattoos, and I don't know that I like this one. I just don't think it's my place to make such judgments about Mayer based on this one.

Ugh, why did he do that? I hate it when guys are just slathered in tattoos...it looks so trashy. :(

I love the flowers and that it's with the Home tattoo~
*sigh* Another tramp stamp, Johnny? I sort of hate this, but oh well...

no fucking way! is that real? he's a dumbass if it is..
Well, if he likes it.
Personally, I don't.
I can't wait to get to see some photos where we can see the different aspects of it.
Ohhhhhhh my dear god! Nothing more rad than a beautiful full sleeve!
Take me now, Sailor!
Love love love it... bring on more!
Ugh. I hate it. John, next time buy some framed art for your house.
What a Dumb Ass for doing this.
Are you 30 or 13?
I hope he doesn’t regret this later on in life.
Just when I thought he was finding himself and growing up.
What was he thinking?
Of course most of his fans hate it for what I gather on this site and others.
As a "fan" I am always interested in John's artistic choices. This one speaks loud and clear and I love it.

To me, when it's so huge and it's running together with other tattoos it's hard to tell what it is exactly.
John murdered his arm.
I'm repulsed too. It's kind of a sad day for me, don't know why. I feel like a huge waste.
I am hoping it is fake.....lets say a prayer hoping it is
that's kind of cool. where did this pic come from? was it one he posted?
Unfortunately, I don't think it's a fake... That would be a miracle
i really love tattoos..... im planning on getting one for my 21st. I don't think this one is finished. Can't wait to hear his comments on it..
I'm not a fan of tattoos, so meh.
but this is not a tatoo, this is a scare !
All the nuances are attractive
ahhhhh.
love love love it.
if its not finished then i cant wait till it is.

oh yea. so did you guys seen the little parody ashton did of john on snl. funny stuff.
Wonder what the folks on John's "payroll" had to say about this? Will it conflict with his/their supplementary revenue streams, i.e. the Gap ads and his 'college kid' appeal ? Of course. How much it does is the question..

WOW is all i can say (not in a good way).
"JM, good on you for being able to express yourself"
You don't need to hurt your body to express yourself. If you're intelligent, you express yourself differently. I think it's a terrible mistake.
I don't like it at all....:-(
oh shit! it looks AMAZING!
WOW!
OMG, love the tatoo!! but "home" doesnt show as much.. love it anyway

There is not enough negative space-no balance.
On the positive side, maybe this will shut up the fans that insist on yelling for YBIAW at every show.

c'mon people, dont judge john.
its HIS body to do with what HE pleases. as long as he keeps making great music what does it matter what ink he has on HIS body?
just accept it and move on.
Damn...I really don't like it. Sorry Johnny.
Whatever happened to "more skin than ink?"
:(
Whatever, it's his skin.
Wow. That is serious dedication on many levels. Do you have any idea how long this must have taken? Hours and hours spent in the chair and the pain! Personally, I love the tat. Its a beautiful design. Can't wait to see it in person this summer. I'm surprised to see all of the hate around here. Guess JM didn't know he had to run his decisions by "the public" for approval.
i betcha it's fake.. i don't know why he would want to cover up his skin like that.. ugly
Really, really, really intrigued..
His rules.
you guys are a tough crowd! I like it.
Maybe it's just a continuation of his quarter life crisis
rock on JM
:D
<333
No!!!!!! His arms looked perfect before with only that box... now it's just too much!
WHY, JOHN, WHY?!
Wow, I think that it's great for him. If the tatoo has real meaning then it's even more beautiful. Don't judge him for getting more art, I'm not a huge sleeve person but I like what they stand for.
WAY cool and HOT.
I'm at a loss for words. I'm not going to pass judgement. I just think I need to let this process. Not sure what to think?
Nooo... his beautiful arm... :(
I am hoping it is pop fiction! but anyway how long do you think it would take to get a tattoo sleeve? I'm thinking a few weeks to get it complete. Could be why he was in Hong Kong for such a long time.
Erica--I highly doubt it's pop fiction haha I really hope John wouldn't stoop to that level... Especially because it would make him look like somewhat of a hypocrite. I don't know. I just think he does enough of it on his own. John's cool.
John
i love you.
but.
i really,really
hate this.
It's beautiful. Japanese are the most talented tattoo artists in my opinion. I love that he did this instead of having a random assortment of "sushi tattoo's" - one here, one there.. XD
That shit is BADASS. Whoa!
An amazing piece of artwork, absolutely beautiful, can't wait to see it on tour!!
________
I agree!
I think it's gorgeous, it looks great on him.
Here's the thing. You can't pull off a tattoo like that unless you're a biker or a rock star. And you know what? He fits one of those categories.
You didn't get what I said. It's sad for you.
Just to let you all know, we have a major league discussion of John's tattoo going on in the JMMA comment section.
www.myspace.com/jmmagroup
Please play nice there...
geez, i hate to butt in and everything but im sorry kamalia what you wrote was pretty straight forward so whats not to get?
correct me if im wrong but you wrote "It affects me at the point where I don't know if I'll be able to listen to his song without feeling uncomfortable."
it is very sad that a tattoo has made you feel this way. the ink and his arm and anywhere else on his body has no effect on the beautiful music he makes, which should be a known fact for any true john mayer fan.
also, judging someone based on whether or not they have tattoos is the equivalent of judging someone on their grammer usage.
so by the looks of your comment, i can only infer that you are highly uneducated. its i cant do anything about it, not nothing.
thank you, a TRUE john mayer fan.
Some of you are being very judgmental as to how john's new tattoo affects his personality.
i said i didn't like it
but i know very damn well this doesn't change what an amazing musician and person he is.
Oh my God. He actually did it.
0.0 I'm speechless. . .
I personally have no issue with him getting more tattoos, but a whole arm is a bit much for my taste.
Lita, I assure you. In about 20 minutes, you'll be totally cool with it. It's like a friend unveiling a drastic haircut that you didn't know about.
He's a sneaky devil, though...
some of you people are seriously trippin...
the comments on here have been down right ignorant...
and to have blogs and chat rooms on the right or wrong of a personal choice is down right pitiful..
how old are some of you...
trashy?
hate this?
rockers and bike people?
closed minded twits... I'm an professional and I have a tat of a panther on my leg... my hubby is a professional as well and he has a full eaglespread wings on his shoulders...
what planet do some of you live on?
that's exactly what I mean... it was never about the music.. all some care about it the look..
idiots..
He hasn't even commented on or explained the inspiration for his art and we're already passing judgment.
all i gotta say is WOW.
i love tats, and this one is SICK. i love the incorporation of color and flowers.
i can't believe he had the balls to do an entire sleeve. you know that probably took a few days to complete.
"idiots.."
2- Can't we all just get along? None of us would be harsh to another in person so let's chill out here too. Please??
101 comments on this already!
There seems to be a lot of judgment towards Mayer and towards other people/fans for judging him. It’s all very judgmental. If you don’t like the tat close your eyes then listen to the music.
Peace and Love :)
yes.. if you are going to make some of the more ignorant comments I've read today.. that makes you an idiot...
and if you "love" him so much or "care" you wouldn't be saying the stuff you are...
and if I was in person I'd say the same thing...
but then I am over 12...
Ok.. I'm done...
"The judgements come from the fact that we care about him and what he does in his life. It may sounds incredible, but judgements make part of the love we show to him because we feel concerned."
Oh grow up... concerned about what? Concerned when a grown man gets a tat?
please...
I'm with you What..
maybe now the swarm of fan girls that buy tickets to see "their John" can be so disgusted by the new look that they won't buy out the tickets and I can get a decent seat..
I think its beautiful, John!
The meaning of the tattoo and his patience to have it is what it's all about! YES! It's a most beautiful way to say and show commitment~
love love love it.
Literally, I have no words. I'm in shock, and I'm not sure if it's good or bad ha.
I'm a huge huge huge tattoo fan, but this is so much all at once. I guess "shocked" is the perfect word =]
I must say the tattoo is absolutely beautiful. But on his arm.... I'ma have to get use to it.
"I could spend my life getting used to this~" singin'...
his tattoos used to be so unique, the srv so special but now they are blurred together and it doesn't make them stand out like they used to and it looses all effect. can't wait to hear his reasoning. maybe it's drawn on like the right arm permanent marker drawing on the cruise???
